Here are some clips of memorable moments in the sim. I picked them mainly because they show some great scenery. They also demonstrate how a wide outside view can help to suspend disbelief... I am aware of the fact that in the real world some of the stunts shown here would have me talking to very serious man in dark suits (...and not only about why I should better hand in my PPL). But this being a simulator, I just got away with it! |

Revisiting St Barts (TFFJ) in a Lear 45. I'm kind of proud of this landing. The runway is short and there is a hill at the end. It was certainly not built with Lear Jets in mind! Scenery by FlyTampa. Plane: Bombardier Lear Jet 45 Duration : 1min 15sec Size: 26.8 MB Format: MPG |

After throwing out all passengers on St.Baarts I loaded 10% fuel each into left and right wing tanks (center tank empty) to make the Lear 45 light enough for takeoff from the 2.100 ft runway. Flaps 25 and 100%N2 woud get me into the air- at least I hoped so. I indeed took off, but just barely. After that, a short hop to Princess Juliana on St. Marteen. Here is a clip of the final approach to RW 09. No instruments are visible in this shot, just some paning around. I tried to mimmick what the pilot, sitting in the simulator would look at (if he's not busy sweeping instruments). The big screen area is not taken in at one glance like a monitor display. Instead, the pilot's eyes dart around to pick up different visual clues. These - plus the peripheral vision - greatly improve the "feeling" of speed and allow good judgement of altitude. Take off and landing at Innsbruck airport (LOWI). In this shot, the camera was fixed 1m behind me. Compared with the 3-monitor setup, the new outside view is much more panoramic. Lighting inside the cockpit needs to be improved, though. Plane: Beech Baron 58 (FS9 standard) Duration: 9min 35sec, Size: 48 MB, Format: AVI (XVid codec) |
